2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised focus, aiming to address community desires.
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full content from the president's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”
Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a sharper brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to heart and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he officially joins us on next week.
His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the recent years producing and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the progress of the game in the weeks to follow.
The President
Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a community playtest. Then, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
Project Ethos lacks an confirmed launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as production continues.
